He stated the general feeling that the Committee had been formed prematurely, and probably should not have been organized until 2026. For the past two celebrations, teams began meeting three years out. What members can do in the meantime is get ideas as to events and places to hold them. Minutes were approved with the parade date corrected to Sunday, 9/10/2028. Guest Ana Lockwood presented the idea of a Carnival on Whalom Lakefront, closing Lake Front Avenue. Parking could be made available at local businesses and shuttle buses used. Facilities Manager Chris Ruth is familiar with fireworks set-ups and has contacts. They would cost $12,000 with barges on Lake Whalom, and $6,000 without the barges. We would need to factor cost of the shuttles. Ana also suggested multiple rides reminiscent of Whalom Park, and perhaps a bouncy house. There are vendors who would give us 20% of gross event profits, and pay 50% of fireworks if we held a multi-day event. A potential Whalom Day in years leading up to 2028 would help us gauge the event and build up anticipation, likely in May with fireworks to begin the tradition. Ana indicated the biggest park area in town is Northfield Park - 64 acres on the left just before Settlers Crossing. Debbie asked if the Selectboard could do a walk through and Lou indicated he would bring it up at the next meeting. COMMITTEE PROGRESS REPORTS Bill noted the Historical Society is at work on a n update to the “Red Book,” so there is no need for Committee involvement at this time. Dawn said the Lions Club would be available for food booths. Kathy said she would work with the Humane Society to set up an Adoption Week. Pete spoke with a representative from the Woo Sox. Lunenburg can arrange for a Sunday to have a Lunenburg Day with a kids run the bases and have the oldest veteran throw out the first pitch. Debbie got the approval from the Cemetery Commission for the Halloween Ghost Walk. It was suggested if there was enough interest and resources, there should be walks at both North and South Cemeteries. Debbie also spoke with Robin Venezia, who offered to spearhead a Colonial Community Garden, with crops grown during the 1720s such as flax and potatoes. ===PAGE 2=== NEW IDEAS Pete suggested Luther Burbank Week, with events such as potato races and a stone marker at the Burbank House, and one at the Lunenburg Adult Activity Center where the potatoes were actually grown. Dawn mentioned the Lions Club had already talked of having a Potato Festival. Debbie showed pictures of various styles of historical markers and referred to the Athol Historical Trail, which has 24 signs around Athol delineating various homesteads and events. Sign placement could be Town Pound, Luther Burbank House, West St. School, Whalom Park, Site of Buttonwood Tree, etc. Bill brought up the “Ice Out,” where a dummy is placed on Whalom Lake and bets are placed when it will fall through the ice. Could also be one on Marshall Pond. FUNDRAISING SUGGESTIONS Michelle suggested namig the “Ice Out” dummy, with prize for the winner Dawn had looked into what Westminster did for their dogs for the Westminster Cracker sponsorship, but it didn’t seem that they made money on it Dawn suggested a Facsimile of New Yorker magazine cover made as Lunenburg as a poster. A motion for adjournment was called for and seconded at 8:39. The next meeting will be September 9, 2024 at 7:00 at the library in the Sudolnik Room. ======================================================================================== DOCUMENT : 2024-09-09-agenda-6924.txt BOARD : lunenburg-300th-anniversary-committee DATE : 2024-09-09 KIND : agenda OUR COPY : https://lunenburgbudgetproject.org/docs/minutes/text/lunenburg-300th-anniversary-committee/2024-09-09-agenda-6924.txt TOWN PDF : https://www.lunenburgma.gov/AgendaCenter/ViewFile/Agenda/_09092024-6924 ======================================================================================== ===PAGE 1=== ======================================================================================== DOCUMENT : 2024-09-09-minutes-6924.txt BOARD : lunenburg-300th-anniversary-committee DATE : 2024-09-09 KIND : minutes OUR COPY : https://lunenburgbudgetproject.org/docs/minutes/text/lunenburg-300th-anniversary-committee/2024-09-09-minutes-6924.txt TOWN PDF : https://www.lunenburgma.gov/AgendaCenter/ViewFile/Minutes/_09092024-6924 ======================================================================================== ===PAGE 1=== LUNENBURG 300TH ANNIVERSARY COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES SEPTEMBER 9, 2024 Sudolnik Room, Lunenburg Library 7:00 p.m. Members present: Laura Brzozoski, Dawn Johnson, Debbie Lincoln, Pete Lincoln, Chris Sullivan, Bill Tyler Members absent: Michelle Belleza, Cathy Clark, Kathy Comeau, Lois Filiau, Tony Sculibrene The meeting was called to order at 7:04 by Chairman Pete Lincoln. He commented that the Committee was meeting two years too early, and that the only thing to do at present was to concentrate on long-range projects until 2026. Kathy Comeau is resigning from the Committee as she is unable to make the time commitments at present, but will be available to help. A motion for passing the minutes was made by Dawn and seconded by Bill and passed unanimously. One long-term project is Lunenburg signs resembling the Massachusetts Tercentenary signs erected in 1930. Pete and Debbie spoke with DPW and Police about placement of signs. Bill asked if it would be possible for QR codes to be added to the signs for additional information. We will need to decide on locations and verbiage for the signs and determine cost. DPW told us the prisoners make most of the signs the town uses. Debbie presented the first ever above ground time capsule, which was done by the Town of Braintree, Mass. in 1976, and suggested that we do a similar structure on the Lower Common. Braintree, England sent an inscribed rock by special boat, and Debbie suggested we could try to get rocks from Lunenburg, Vermont, Nova Scotia, Germany. Local contractors can be on the lookout for a potato-shaped rock for the Luther Burbank memorial for the LAAC backyard. Debbie met with Interim Town Manager Carter Terenzini, who expressed interest in furthering the property on Northfield Road. He has had experience with the town of Spencer and their 250th. Their biggest sources of funding were Town Meeting appropriation, corporate donations, state funding through Representatives and Senators, but mostly through sales of memorabilia. They made enough money to give the Town back what they they had appropriated them. He also stated that the schools could not make money charging the 300th for events, but expenses like Police details and janitorial fees would have to be decided between the school budget and the 300th budget. Pete and Debbie met with Facilities Manager Chris Ruth, who has considerable background with fireworks. He suggested a location behind Passios where fireworks could be set off and seen at both the high school football field and the area where the band concerts are now held. A good display would cost $500/minute. The bonfire remains one of the most-wanted events, but a location has still not been determined. The premiere event of the year would be the Birthday Celebration 7/28-7/30/2028. Proposed activities are fireworks, a carnival, and Olympics. Other ideas were Main Street feasts, contests for branding, Artisan weekend, floats. The meeting was adjourned at 8:14. The next meeting is Monday, December 9 at 7:00 at the Lunenburg Adult Activity Center (Eagle House.) Minutes approved unanimously 12/9/24. Submitted by D. COMMITTEE COMMENTS: Cathy Clark brought a variety of Lunenburg Christmas ornaments and suggested they would be a good fundraiser. Pete Lincoln announced the next meeting would be 4/28/25, and that would be the first true organizational meeting. He also reported that Officer Sean Zrate would be your liaison for the Police, Fire and DPW. Our job as a Committee is not to do everything ourselves, but to encourage townspeople and organizations to get involved and have as much community participation as possible. The most-wanted event is the bonfire, but where it can be held is a persistent problem. The Fire Department is now unionized and not anxious to support the event. Town owned land does not seem a feasible location at this time, or even in the near future. Privately owned land would raise insurance questions. Bill and Tony are going to look into this, and Dawn will talk with Jim Lattanzi. Debbie mentioned an encounter with Marc Valentine, the “Flag Truck Guy,” in Halifax, and the possibility of his bringing 90’ flags for our birthday celebration. Dawn suggested a Scavenger Hunt with signs placed around town, and Cathy suggested they be sponsored by local businesses. Hailee is going to try to bring the schools into the celebration, teaching Lunenburg History, also involving the Drama Club, and potential Community Service. All agreed publicity was essential through The Ledger and Facebook and the Committee spreading the word. MINUTES Motion to approve minutes by Dawn, seconded by Bill, and were approved unanimously with the correction of one typo. PROGRESS ON PROJECTS Pete and Debbie will fund the signs and the cairn as their personal projects, so no fundraising will be necessary for those projects. Pete has several leads on providers for signs. Dan Proctor is looking for a potato-shaped rock. ===PAGE 2=== There is an All Vendors Fair May 10th sponsored by Parks and LBA. There is a $40 fee. We should be a presence at that event. There will be a follow-up to see if we need to pay the fee. The Marshall Park completion date is still TBD, so there is no certainty we can plan events at that venue, which leaves the question of where can large groups assemble? ACTIVITIES SUGGESTIONS Tony suggested the use of Memorial Drive for events such as community suppers. Tony thought an Informational Bulletin Board would be useful, and Chris recommended a Town Calendar of Events and volunteered to head up a Facebook page. An agenda item for the next meeting is how do we best connect with other town organizations and committees. There were street-wide banners for the last celebration, and Lois wondered where they were, and if we could do something similar for the 300th. Dawn motioned to adjourn at 8:06, Cathy seconded, and the motion passed unanimously. Thanks to Chris Sullivan, the $40 entry fee was waived. Laura, Bill, Caesar, Paulette, and Jeanne offered to be present at the event. Bill will bring memorabilia the Historical Society has from the 250th and 275th celebrations. Laura can supply tent. There will be signup sheets for volunteers for 300th events as part of the Tricentennial Team. Chris will set up an email: lunenburg1728@gmail.com Paulette Beardmore and Jeanne Dupre have submitted applications to serve on the Committee. Tony motioned for approval of 12/9/24 minutes, seconded by Cathy with amended venue and corrected spelling of Laura’s name. The motion was approved unanimously. As a followup to the resignation from the Committee of Chairman Peter Lincoln, Vice Chair Bill Tyler said he would consider being Co-Chair, but was not interested in serving as Chair. The Committee deferred electing a Chair until further investigation could be done as to who might be willing to serve in that capacity. Bill Tyler reported a meeting he had with Fire Chief Pat Sullivan, Jim Lattanzi and Pete and Debbie Lincoln. Jim offered his tree farm as a place to have a bonfire. Chief Sullivan indicated difficulty with staffing for such an event; Jim could cover that with Fitchburg and volunteers, also he has ample water supply and parking. It seems as though this is a great possibility for our event. Guest Ana Lockwood brought up the possibility of using Whalom Lakefront as a venue using local businesses for parking and having shuttle buses. The motion to adjourn at 8:19 by Laura, seconded by Tony was unanimously approved. The next meeting is scheduled for August 25 at 7:00 at the library. ===PAGE 2=== ======================================================================================== DOCUMENT : 2025-08-25-agenda-7347.txt BOARD : lunenburg-300th-anniversary-committee DATE : 2025-08-25 KIND : agenda OUR COPY : https://lunenburgbudgetproject.org/docs/minutes/text/lunenburg-300th-anniversary-committee/2025-08-25-agenda-7347.txt TOWN PDF : https://www.lunenburgma.gov/AgendaCenter/ViewFile/Agenda/_08252025-7347 ======================================================================================== ===PAGE 1=== Michelle Belleza Lois Filiau Tony Sculimbrene Cesar Nuzzolo, Liaison Laura Brzozoski Dawn Johnson, Treasurer Chris Sullivan Cathy Clark Debbie Lincoln, Clerk Bill Tyler, Vice Chairman 1. FB page should be shareable but no comments. Guest Joeci Gilchrest had a number of suggestions as to how to fundraise and work with other groups, in particular the LBA, zeffy.com and the United Way. Promotional materials should be available for the May Town Meeting. History of Lunenburg Businesses, e.g. bookbinding is a possibility of an event. 4 events are set on stone at this point: First Knight - December 31st where should it be? Laser show - Pinnacle Laser? Questions: Can we use school fields? Can we disestablish as a town entity and re-establish as an ad hoc group so that we can function without the constraints of town board fundraising and open meeting laws? What is the status of our seed money? Suggestion was made that we pick one or two topics for agenda items for next meeting, as the agenda was too lengthy for one meeting.
